The Most Natural Therapy There Is.

Light.

Photobiomodulation, also known as red light therapy (RLT) or low level light therapy (LLLT), uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular function. With correct dosage and consistency, photobiomodulation is shown to have many positive effects from cosmetic to athletic recovery.

At Miami Acupuncture and Herbal Solutions, the marriage of ancient wisdom and modern science has always been relied on to improve patient outcomes. RLT is a new tool using old knowledge, to empower modern living.

How Does It Work?

  • Applied pre-workout, red and near-infrared light primes mitochondria for peak ATP output, delaying fatigue and reducing the mechanical damage of the session itself. Post-workout, it upregulates the body's endogenous antioxidant cascade, neutralizing the destructive ROS surge that follows intense training. Deeper repair is driven by satellite cell activation, stimulating muscle stem cells to proliferate and differentiate into new myofibrils, while a cytokine shift away from pro-inflammatory proteins toward anti-inflammatory IL-10 and IL-4 resolves soreness at its source. Combined with nitric oxide-mediated vasodilation that floods recovering tissue with oxygen and clears residual lactate, RLT produces documented reductions in delayed-onset muscle soreness of up to 50%, making it one of the most mechanistically comprehensive recovery modalities available.

  • Red and near-infrared light attack pain through at least five simultaneous, independent pathways: photodissociated nitric oxide dilates local vasculature to flush algogenic metabolites like bradykinin and prostaglandins; COX-2 expression is suppressed, cutting prostaglandin E2 synthesis by the same mechanism targeted by NSAIDs but without systemic side effects; β-endorphins and enkephalins are released locally, engaging the body's own opioid receptors; TRPV1 pain receptors are desensitized, raising the threshold for thermal and chemical pain signals; and C-fiber and Aδ-fiber nerve conduction velocity is reduced, dampening pain transmission at the source. For neuropathic pain specifically, repeated exposure promotes Schwann cell activity and nerve growth factor expression, addressing nerve damage structurally rather than just symptomatically, a distinction that separates RLT from analgesics that merely mask the signal.

  • At 630–670 nm, red light penetrates the dermis and energizes fibroblast mitochondria, driving a surge in collagen type I & III and elastin production while simultaneously shutting down the enzymes that break existing collagen down, creating a net rebuilding effect. New capillary growth improves nutrient delivery to skin, accelerated cell turnover refines surface texture, and suppression of inflammatory signals addresses the chronic low-grade inflammation underlying rosacea, uneven tone, and acne. The addition of 480 nm blue light adds a powerful complementary layer that works at the surface to destroy acne-causing bacteria from within and regulate oil gland activity, making it especially effective for breakout-prone or congested skin. Together, these wavelengths address many concerns for skin health simultaneously, at the cellular level, in a single session.

  • Cartilage is one of the few tissues in the body with no blood supply of its own, which is precisely why joint injuries and arthritis are so slow to heal. Near-infrared light bypasses this limitation by penetrating directly into joint tissue, where it energizes cartilage cells to actively rebuild the structural proteins that keep joints cushioned and functional, while simultaneously switching off the enzymes responsible for breaking cartilage down and drive osteoarthritic progression. At the same time, inflammation in the joint lining is reduced, swelling decreases, and the underlying bone is supported through improved cellular remodeling. Even Substance P — the neuropeptide that amplifies both joint pain and inflammation — is downregulated with consistent use. The result is a therapy that works on the structure, the inflammation, and the pain signaling of a damaged joint all at once.

  • Red and near-infrared light penetrate the skull and are absorbed by mitochondria in neurons, triggering boosted ATP production, nitric oxide release, and a significant reduction in neuroinflammation driven by microglial cells. What makes this remarkable is the upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) — proteins that support the survival, growth, and repair of neurons. This has shown real clinical promise for traumatic brain injury, concussion recovery, and neurodegenerative conditions, with emerging research pointing to benefits for cognitive performance and mood regulation via effects on the prefrontal cortex.

  • Red and near-infrared light target the stem cells in the hair follicle's bulge region, stimulating them via the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway to shift follicles from their dormant resting phase (telogen) into active growth (anagen). Alongside this, improved scalp microcirculation delivers better nutrient and oxygen supply directly to the follicle, and the reduction of DHT-driven follicular inflammation addresses one of the primary mechanisms behind androgenic alopecia. Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated significant increases in hair density and shaft thickness with consistent use, in both men and women. Unlike topical treatments that work only at the surface, RLT acts at the cellular signaling level, reactivating follicles that have gone quiet rather than simply coating the ones still active.

Common Questions

  • Red light therapy uses zero ultraviolet light. The wavelengths that cause tanning, burning, and DNA damage in skin cells are entirely absent. RLT operates in the red and near-infrared spectrum, which is the same family of light your body naturally receives from sunlight but without any of the harmful components. There is no tanning, no burning, and no increased skin cancer risk. In fact, RLT is increasingly being studied for its potential to support skin repair at the cellular level, the opposite of UV damage.

  • This depends on what you're treating, and we'd rather be honest with you than overpromise. The greatest effects are typically noticeable within four to eight weeks of consistent use, since collagen remodeling takes time by nature. Pain and inflammation responses tend to come faster, often within a few sessions. Hair regrowth is the most patient application, with meaningful changes usually visible around the three-to-six month mark. The underlying biology is working from the very first session, the visible results just follow on their own timeline.

  • There are no known serious adverse effects for RLT at therapeutic doses, which is a statement very few medical or wellness modalities can make. Some people experience mild, temporary warmth or a slight flush in the treated area, both of which are normal vascular responses and resolve quickly. The main contraindications are active photosensitizing medications (certain antibiotics and acne medications can increase light sensitivity), pregnancy, and a history of skin cancer in the treatment area — all of which we'll discuss with you before your first session. If in doubt about anything in your health history, we always recommend a conversation with your doctor first.

  • This is not like medicine, it’s more like exercise. Consistent use produces cumulative, compounding results, and reducing or stopping use means those benefits gradually decline over time as the biological processes slow back down. Most find a maintenance rhythm that works for them: intensive sessions early on, tapering to a frequency that sustains the results they care most about. There is no dependency, withdrawal, or rebound effect. Your body simply returns, slowly, to its baseline.

  • The wellness world is full of overblown claims and we encourage skepticism. What separates RLT from most trends is the depth and volume of its research base. Over 5,000 peer-reviewed studies published in medical journals, including randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses across multiple therapeutic applications. NASA researched it for wound healing in space. The mechanism of action — photon absorption by Cytochrome c Oxidase in the mitochondria — is established biochemistry. We would never offer a therapy we couldn't defend scientifically, and we're happy to share the research with anyone here.

  • Consumer devices and clinical panels differ significantly in two key ways: power output (irradiance) and wavelength precision. A therapeutic dose of light requires a specific amount of energy delivered to the tissue and most budget devices don't produce enough output to reach those levels in a reasonable time, if at all. Clinical panels also use rigorously calibrated, research-backed wavelengths rather than approximations. That said, quality at-home devices do exist at higher price points, and we're happy to guide you on what to look for if that's a path you're considering.
